Methadone Pain Management: Killing Pain, Killing People

Use of methadone pain management has caused already a lot of deaths due to overdoses, addiction, injuries, and exposures of mothers on pain management among others. To this effect, it is a puzzle why it is still rampantly prescribed despite the odds.

For one, it is undeniable that methadone has many unique properties that makes it an ideal and widely preferred pain management drug of medical practitioners to manage pain among patients with terminal diseases like cancer. What makes it, particularly ideal is that being a synthetic opioid makes it cheaper, yet it offers relief overtime. It is a recourse taken when medical interventions cannot anymore seek appropriate solutions for a medical case. It alleviates the pain of patients whose lives may be halted anytime at any day.

While it may have its benefits and is a good alternative to more addictive and powerful drugs, it must, however, be also recognized as a highly addictive substance itself just like other opioids (heroin and morphine). For this reason, its administration and use must be done with caution to prevent possible precarious repercussions. Under this circumstance, management becomes more complicated and perils become more possible.

The wide use of methadone pain management is in part linked to its affordability, hence making it more reachable for many patients. This explains why methadone has been commonly and indiscriminately prescribed, used and abused as a pain reliever even to mild or uncomplicated pain cases. Regulation of methadone is complicated by the easy access to prescriptions of methadone, thus causing more abuses and mortalities. What makes it worse is that the death statistics due to methadone pain management is still growing, necessitating a second thought on its usefulness in managing pain. Its prescription and dispensation must be regulated in order to minimize its ill effects.

Methadone was synthesized for its benefits. Efforts must be exerted so that that the true value would not be cancelled by the irresponsible actions of some prescribers and users. Vigilance must be exercised so that it will only be able to kill what it was intended for-pain.
