Not Sleeping at Night
Some people can fall into bed and they are sleeping within minutes if not seconds. The rest of us struggle some nights to fall asleep and stay asleep. If you are one of those people that feels they are not getting enough sleep, you probably already know that this can have negative effects on your life and your health. Not sleeping at night can mean you get sick more easily and that your brain is not working at full capacity. If these things are occurring in your life, you need to find a way to get more sleep, even if you need a short term medication to help.
There are many reasons why you are not sleeping at night. One reason could be anxiety and racing thoughts. This is probably one of the top reasons why people cannot get to sleep. If you think about your problems before bed, and if you suffer from anxiety, you are not going to get enough sleep. See if you can find a way to work out how to deal with your anxiety first, and then see if you do not fall asleep more quickly. It may not cure all of your sleeping issues, but it may help you get a few solid nights in a week, which is better than nothing.
Anxiety may not be why you are not sleeping at night. You could be making yourself resistant to sleep without realizing it. Those that can not sleep can suffer from the never-ending to-do list syndrome. This means you feel that you did not get things done during the day and you lie there thinking about what else you have to do. Solve this by making a to-do list each day. This list should be reasonable, which means you have every chance to get it completed. The sense of satisfaction you get when you check each item off can help you sleep at night. Also have paper somewhere so you can write down thoughts that pop into your head. This will help you sleep as well.
If you have a television or a computer in your bedroom, this may also be why you are not sleeping at night. The computer and the television can remind you of work or recreation time which will induce worry or excitement. Neither of these are good for sleeping. Get these things out of your room if you can. Find ways to hide them away if you cannot. Make sure little to no light is coming into your room and use white noise to help you fall and stay asleep.
Lastly, give yourself all the help you can before you go to bed. If you are not sleeping at night, you should try some of the old remedies your grandmother and even your mother may have used to fall asleep. Drink some warm milk before you go to sleep, and calm your body down with a warm bath. Keep excitement to a minimum an hour before you want to sleep, and shut off the phone at a decent hour. The more you relax your brain and your body before you want to sleep, the more chance you have of quickly drifting off into dreamland.
