I have been in the very interesting position of being a night owl and early bird at different points in my life. While being a night owl certainly has a number of advantages over rising early in the morning, it does have some drawbacks as well.
One of the biggest advantages to being a night owl is that you don’t have to deal with all of the traffic and chaos that you would during the day. It is so quiet that I could always get a lot of things accomplished and have a good feeling about it. I would work all the way through the night until mid-morning, and then hit the sack and sleep until mid to late evening. With that, however, is one of the drawbacks of being a night owl.
Trying to sleep during the day is not always the easiest thing to do. I know that on more than one occasion, I was woken up by landscapers or construction workers. It is also sometimes difficult to sleep with the sunlight shining through the curtains. Fortunately for me, I had some blackout curtains that kept the sunlight out during the day.
Another one of the good things about being a night owl is that I was able to be up in the morning with my children and get them breakfast and get them off to school. That was probably the thing that I loved the most about it, because that was important time for us as a family. Then, I would be up in the evening after the kids had completed their homework, and I could spend time with them before they went to bed.
One of the problems that I personally faced with being a night owl, on the other hand, was that I started to feel mildly depressed. I went to my doctor who informed me that that was something fairly common, as dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in a person’s mood, was replaced at night, while most people slept. Once I made the switch back to days, everything slowly improved for me, and I figured that must have been the cause, because I really did not change anything else besides when I slept and when I was awake.
Being a night owl definitely had its advantages and disadvantages, and I have had the opportunity to experience them all. I know for some people, that is the only way that they want to live their lives. For me, I think that I will probably remain an early bird for the foreseeable future, but I do know that I am capable of living both ways.See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image - See full size image -
